ASC/ICG Waimanalo Herf 98

May 16, 1998

The Second Annual Waimanalo Herf & Surf was held at Jim Mulligan's beachfront estate on May 16, 1998. It was just another one of those wonderful classic Hawaiian days w/clear blue skies, warm gentle breezes w/just a hint of ocean, and a few puffy clouds.

I arrived Hawaiian Time (late!) and the herf was already in full swing! There were huge pizzas and other pupus (appetizers for you mainlanders!) on the table along w/some of M/M Nix's prized SM Scotch! Eric and Dawn (aka Laurie) Monty (the Mooch!) donated a very cool framed cigar band collection for some lucky winner! Sorry...I forget who won and somehow missed a photo! The frame was only half full so the winner could fill the rest of it up with his own bands! Let me tell you....I've never seen so many Papayo bands! Anyway...Very cool! Thank you Eric and Dawn!

Eric and Dawn Montgomery, Jon Fia, the back of Nix's head, and Leeland's right arm and leg!

The front of Nix's head! Notice how close he is to his prized SMS and the huge pizzas!

Garrett Ing, Our Host Jim Mulligan, and Ken Schmitt with Rabbit Island in the background

A couple of Nix's friends! Hey...didn't one of those guys win the cigar frame?

Also very cool was the cigar grab bag event. Everyone placed a cigar in a paper bag and later pulled one out...blind. The range of cigars in the bag were really varied...from Habanos to the infamous Papayo which Jon Fia sneaked in! I can only imagine what else would have been in the bag had TMG made it to the event! Heh! Heh! But the real surprise was when Jon awarded the Papayo recepient w/a Cohiba! And yes, he got to keep the Papayo too!

Needless to say, Laurie did not win!

Right around that time, I was getting a little thirsty. I vaguely remember Jim saying he was supplying the beers for the day. So being a true Mig trainee...I brought NOTHING to the event other than a chair, a bottle of water, and cigars. So I looked around and found a well stocked cooler which I assumed belonged to our host. I momentarily thought it was a little odd for Monty to comment on how much he loved those beers. Thought to myself that Jim and Monty must have the same taste in beer. Well, they were right...damm great beer! So I had another....and another...and lucky me...I found and quicky guzzled the last one! It was later....much later...when I finally realized to my horror that it was Monty's ice chest and beer!!! But the Montys were so gracious...they didn't say a thing or do anything to indicate that I DRANK ALL OF THEIR BEER!!! So thank you M/M Monty...for your kindness...for being so gracious....AND FOR THE BEERS!!!

MAHALO FOR THE BEERS MONTY!

All in all....another classic Hawaii Herf Event! Sun, sand, great food, great drinks, great friends, and last but not least, great cigars! Life just doesn't get any better! Again, a very big mahalo to Jim Mulligan for hosting this event for the second year in a row! It was a real treat for all of us and we enjoyed it very much! Also mahalo to M/M Nix for the SMS, Jon Fia for putting together the cigar grab bag game, The Cigar Room in Kaimuki for the Boss cigars, Garrett Ing for the huge pizzas, and to the Hawaii ASC gang for always making the events so fun filled and memorable! Oh...and yes...a very big mahalo to M/M Monte for the framed cigar band collection, the pupus....and of course....THE BEER!!!

Mahalo Nui Loa!
