St. Charles Hardwoods is located on the west outer road off State Highway 94 in St. Charles about 3-1/2 miles north of US 40. I spoke to Jim Hinton there when I dropped in for a visit recently. He was not fazed by my inquiry regarding Spanish Cedar and in fact he immediately led me to the bin in the warehouse where it is stocked. They carry plenty, in various widths of 1/2" lumber and they will mill to any thickness you desire!
Mr. Hinton told me that they sell quite a bit of Spanish Cedar to humidor builders in the area and said he was thinking of building one for himself because, while he smokes a pipe regularly, he enjoys an occasional cigar. (He'd never heard of an igloo-dor before and was quite interested in hearing all the construction details!)
As you would expect from their name, St. Charles Hardwoods carries many other fine woods in addition to Spanish Cedar that would be perfect for any humidor project you could imagine. In a quick ten minute visit, I saw some truly beautiful examples of walnut, oak, mahogany and fruit woods. Everyone I met there was friendly, knowledgeable and eager to be of assistance.
1/2" Spanish Cedar is priced at $4.20 per square foot at St. Charles Hardwoods (as of April, 1997).
Note: Mr. Hinton mentioned that they are about to break ground on a new and larger building on Mid-Rivers Mall Drive, a few miles from their current location. He said they expect to be moving sometime in the Fall of this year.
