Until recently, John Dengler's in downtown St. Charles was the lone tobacconist in St. Charles County. While Dengler's is a very interesting place where one can occasionally find a gem, they are mainly a pipe shop that keeps a few cigars as a sideline. St. Charles County has been a tough place to find a good cigar. One might say a wide-open market.
The new Tinder Box on Mid-Rivers Mall Drive goes a long way toward filling this gap. Located in a brand-new strip mall with a Target department store and a Dierbergs grocery store, it should be in a high traffic spot. There are several affluent suburban developments very nearby where they can draw business.
The store itself is pretty much what you would expect from Tinder Box in this environment. One entire wall, nearly fifty feet, is lined with display humidors containing a fine selection of good smokes. In the back of the store is yet another humidor, a walk-in, where boxes are kept. The other side of the store displays humidors, pipes and accessories, including a large selection of Colibri lighters.
Joe Aiello, the owner, has done a good job making his store into an inviting place where one can feel comfortable shooting the breeze while lighting up. Joe is knowledgeable about his subject and we spent the better part of an hour talking cigars, the cigar business, the fad and the Internet.
I enjoyed my first visit to the new St. Charles Tinder Box and will return often. I bought a box of twenty Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur No. 3 Maduros for $105.00 - a very reasonable price these days.
